Mbumba endorses Odinga’s campaign for AU Commission role

COMMENDABLE … President Nangolo Mbumba and Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

President Nangolo Mbumba has commended the United States (US) government for its decision to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The move has been widely celebrated as a significant step towards normalising relations between the two nations.

Namibia has long called for the complete removal of the decades-old economic embargo imposed on Cuba, though these efforts have yet to yield tangible results.

“I commend the US government for finally taking this long-overdue step to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism,” Mbumba says.

“Namibia has consistently opposed this designation, deeming it arbitrary, unjust and without any basis in international law.”

The president says this milestone should be followed by the lifting of the economic blockade, which he described as “unjust and illegal”.

“The removal of Cuba from the list is undoubtedly a step in the right direction and brings hope for the full normalisation of relations between Cuba and the US,” he says.

Namibia has maintained strong ties with Cuba, recognising its historical contributions to liberation struggles in southern Africa.

Executive director of international relations and cooperation Penda Naanda also welcomed the move.

“This is indeed a significant step towards improving relations between the two countries.

The government further believes this move is expected to ease some economic restrictions and foster better understanding, as well as result in good diplomatic relations,” he says.

Naanda says Namibia is confident that this gesture by the outgoing US administration will contribute to strengthening international cooperation.

“This is a positive development for both nations and could pave the way for further cooperation and mutual understanding.

The Namibian government takes this opportunity to encourage both countries to work together and live as good neighbours,” he says.
