JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s central bank Governor Tito Mboweni reiterated on Friday that it was “out of the question for now” for crisis-ridden Zimbabwe to join southern Africa’s rand monetary union.
A newspaper report last month quoted unidentified sources as saying the Southern African Development Community was working on a plan to ease Zimbabwe’s economic crisis by linking its currency to the solid rand. The rand Common Monetary Area currently comprises South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.”Not even Botswana is in there.Zimbabwe is quite far away.Zimbabwe is just out of the question for now,” Mboweni told parliament on Friday, reiterated previous comments he has made on the issue.Nampa-ReutersThe rand Common Monetary Area currently comprises South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.”Not even Botswana is in there.Zimbabwe is quite far away.Zimbabwe is just out of the question for now,” Mboweni told parliament on Friday, reiterated previous comments he has made on the issue.Nampa-Reuters
