Manie and Arno impressive at Subaru mountain biking

THE Subaru Sabie Mountain Biking Marathon event staged in South Africa last Saturday, attracted hundreds of cyclists who lined up in various categories to crank the challenging 80 kilometre race.

In the general classification category, it was the reigning African MTB Champion, Mannie Heymans from Namibia, who has put up a battle with Jacques Rossouw right from the start. This battle continued through the event until it ended up in a sprint at the finish line, which was narrowly won by Rossow.The two registered the same time over the gruelling 80-km distance.Namibia’s junior rider, Arno Viljoen, took the race by storm and outclassed the entire junior field by crossing the finish line in the first position and thus secured for Namibia.Even more astonishing is that Viljoen was placed third in the general clasification category, just behind fellow countryman Heymans.Viljoen paced himself well through the race and managed the challenging technical sections efficiently – a remakable performcne by the talented junior mountain biker.The competition was severe and performance of skills and endurance displayed by participating cyclists was excellent, organisers said.Mountain bikers evaluated the course as the toughest yet in the South African Marathon Series.The route comprised of single track, jeep track, nasty downhill and extremely difficult uphill.Viljoen was sponsored by Radio Wave, while Heymans was supported by Air Namibia, MTC and Subaru S.A.Heymans is expected to leave for Cape Town today, to compete in the Cape Epic, starting on Saturday, February 28.Heymans is also the patron of the Cape Epic MTB multi-stage race, the first ever of its kind on African soil.This battle continued through the event until it ended up in a sprint at the finish line, which was narrowly won by Rossow.
