RUNDU – The Regional Manager of the Mahangu Market Intelligence Unit, John Shivute, has urged residents who intend to sell mahangu in bags to assemble in their constituencies.
Shivute told Nampa last week that some crop farmers in the region – especially those in inland areas – faced serious transport problems when it came to taking their mahangu to market in Rundu. He suggested that those who wanted to sell should organise themselves and assemble in their respective areas so that buyers could reach them easily.Shivute said many farmers might lose a lot of money since they would have to pay for transporting their mahangu to Rundu. He appealed to the Kavango Regional Farmers’ Union to assist their members to reach areas where mahangu is sold – mainly Rundu as well as at Katjina-katji village south of Rundu.Shivute pointed out that at present Namib Mills wanted to buy 200 tons of mahangu this year while South African Grain Company intended to buy 350 tons.Although Namib Mills’ prices this year have declined from N$1,80 a kilogramme to N$1,60, Shivute encouraged residents to sell their mahangu in order to make a profit. The South African Grain Company indicated it would buy mahangu for N$1,70 per kg, so those wanting to sell should hurry up before the company reached other regions, Shivute said. The manager was optimistic that his office would help those assembling in their respective areas by ensuring that buyers reach them easily. This year many mahangu producers recorded good harvests due to good rainfall.- NampaHe suggested that those who wanted to sell should organise themselves and assemble in their respective areas so that buyers could reach them easily.Shivute said many farmers might lose a lot of money since they would have to pay for transporting their mahangu to Rundu. This year many mahangu producers recorded good harvests due to good rainfall.- Nampa
