Mad About The Mayor

Mad About The Mayor

KINDLY allow me to air my views on the recent conviction of Katima Mulilo Mayor Michael Mudabeti as reported in The Namibian of 18th August 2004.

When the rule of law is upheld in society irrespective of who is the culprit – a community is safe. Over years Swapo ‘s so-called “hard liners” have come to think that they can get away with anything – from the misuse of government property to corruption.Corrupt and irresponsible community leaders and all those entrusted in safe-guarding public interest must never get away from “petty” crimes-as their position calls and demands for exemplary discipline, humility and honesty -without which they should relinquish public duties.Letting them ge t away with anything is setting a “time bomb” for lawlessness and ungovernable public institution.Which brings me to Katima Mulilo Mayor Mudabeti. He has brought a great embarrassment and shame on the people and town of Katima Mulilo. How could a Mayor of all people, turn a management meeting into a “boxing ring”? Which makes me wonder why, until today he is still a Mayor of Katima Mulilo, how could a community let such a person be responsible for the daily activities of building a town into peace and prosperity when he -himself is a “loose cannon”.How can a “bullying Mayor” be an example to our youth, students? Katima Mulilo Town Council has a history of disunity from the first inception at independence to successive ones to today. It requires people who are geared towards improving good working relations, harmony and peace for the people and town of Katima Mulilo. If public officials and political office bearers are at each other’s throats how can a town prosper? I call upon Katima Mulilo Mayor to do the most honourable and dignified step for the best interest of Katima Mulilo and other Namibian towns by handing in his resignation and offering a unequivocal public apology to the community for his “primitive” and uncalled for deeds. If not the people and Swapo members must remove him from office.I believe Swapo has better people to take over the job that allows a person to tarnish the good name of the political party that he represents. If not, Katima Mulilo Town Counci and people will carry a brand and be tinted with the same brush as the Mayor. It is regrettable that he was just discharged without serving time in prison, but the least minimum sentence befitting his kind could have been to perform community service.Joseph Mulife Muchali CanadaOver years Swapo ‘s so-called “hard liners” have come to think that they can get away with anything – from the misuse of government property to corruption.Corrupt and irresponsible community leaders and all those entrusted in safe-guarding public interest must never get away from “petty” crimes-as their position calls and demands for exemplary discipline, humility and honesty -without which they should relinquish public duties.Letting them ge t away with anything is setting a “time bomb” for lawlessness and ungovernable public institution.Which brings me to Katima Mulilo Mayor Mudabeti. He has brought a great embarrassment and shame on the people and town of Katima Mulilo. How could a Mayor of all people, turn a management meeting into a “boxing ring”?
