President Nangolo Mbumba on the 35th anniversary, on 9 February 2025, of the adoption of the Namibian Constitution.
The Namibian Constitution, adopted on the 9th of February 1990, embodies the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
It demonstrates our determination to build a united, prosperous and peaceful nation.
In honouring our constitutional legacy and entrenching its future, we draw inspiration from our founding president and father of the Namibian nation, Sam Nujoma, our second president, Hifikepunye Pohamba, and our third president, Hage G Geingob, the chief architects of our Constitution, who all tirelessly championed its values and principles to forge a nation where every citizen enjoys unity, liberty and justice.
Today, on the 9th of February 2025, on Constitution Day, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Namibian Constitution under the theme: ‘Honouring Our Constitutional Legacy: Unity, Liberty, and Justice.’
Indeed, we unite to celebrate the enduring constitutional values that remain the cornerstone of our democracy and a guiding beacon towards a just society.
Our constitution enshrines fundamental human rights and freedoms, empowering Namibians to actively participate in governance, political activity and societal development. We hold these rights of the Namibian sovereign to be pivotal in order to strengthen our constitutional democracy where the judiciary and the legislature provide for a system of checks and balances in governance.
Our democracy has matured, ushering in a new era of leadership. As we approach the 21 March, I urge all Namibians to prepare for this momentous occasion which will mark another triumph of our constitutional democracy, consolidating our collective aspirations for continued progress.
May this 35th anniversary of Constitution Day renew our collective resolve to strengthen our processes, systems and institutions. May the 9th of February continue to be a day on which we are reminded about our ongoing commitment to promote an inclusive society, celebrate diversity, uphold human rights, and foster peace and stability.
Long live the Namibian Constitution!
Long live the Republic of Namibia!
