FOLLOWING complaints by long-distance bus operators that a 10 per cent increase in fares was too low, the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) upped bus fares by 11,5 per cent yesterday.
Nabta’s interim secretary, Andreas Nuule, said this translated into a N$10 increase in bus and minibus fares. The decision was taken by members of the Nabta Interim Working Committee and the association’s regional representatives in Windhoek on Saturday.”The increase is countrywide for taxi and bus operators,” said Nuule. This means that people travelling from Windhoek to Oshakati now have to pay N$105 per trip, while a trip from Windhoek to Walvis Bay costs N$85.Taxi owners complained that the 10 per cent increase announced by Nabta last week was too low to offset the continuously increasing fuel prices.Short-distance taxi fares within towns went up by the previously announced 50 cents to N$6 per trip yesterday.
