Local Authorities want survey on inefficiency

LOCAL Authorities in Namibia have called for a household survey that will help cut inefficiency and bad management in municipalities.

Speaking at the second Namibia Village Forum Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Mariental on Saturday, Vice President of the Namibia Mayor’s Forum, Emilia Amupewa, said a survey of this nature would enable the nation to understand the community’s attitude and knowledge on paying for services rendered by local authorities. “[I]nefficiencies have resulted in poor revenue collection and contributed to the inability of local authorities to settle their debts with the bulk suppliers of water and electricity respectively,” said Amupewa.Amupewa urged the village councillors to embark on local economic development programmes for the betterment of communities and to combat unemployment.Minister of Regional and Local Government and Housing Joel Kaapanda called on the councillors as “engineers of development” to act as responsible representatives of the people who voted them into power.”Don’t engage yourselves in scandals and irresponsible decisions like the Omaruru prime land case,” the Minister said.Kaapanda expressed his gratitude towards “reinvigorated village councils” that had showed determination to improve their capacity to respond to the challenges of urban development, poverty reduction and economic growth. The Namibia Village Forum AGM was convened to report on the issues that were delegated to the Management Committee during the first AGM and to address new issues that surfaced in-between.”[I]nefficiencies have resulted in poor revenue collection and contributed to the inability of local authorities to settle their debts with the bulk suppliers of water and electricity respectively,” said Amupewa.Amupewa urged the village councillors to embark on local economic development programmes for the betterment of communities and to combat unemployment.Minister of Regional and Local Government and Housing Joel Kaapanda called on the councillors as “engineers of development” to act as responsible representatives of the people who voted them into power.”Don’t engage yourselves in scandals and irresponsible decisions like the Omaruru prime land case,” the Minister said.Kaapanda expressed his gratitude towards “reinvigorated village councils” that had showed determination to improve their capacity to respond to the challenges of urban development, poverty reduction and economic growth.
