With 10 international concerts planned for Saturday, some of the worldÂ’s top music stars hope to build pressure on the leaders of the richest countries ahead next weekÂ’s G8 summit to double aid, drop the debt and make the trade laws fair. Yesterday The Namibian took to the streets in Windhoek to find out whether Namibians know about the Live 8 concerts and what they think about the initiative.
Have you heard about the Live 8 concerts taking place? Heinrich Moetley Goinaseb: “I have heard of it but I do not think that it will benefit the people it is supposed to. People are raising funds but there are no changes. The money does not go to the people it is supposed to because of government corruption. Only people that are benefiting already will benefit some more, not the people that are really needy”. Fredi Brockerhoff: “I know about the Live 8 concerts. I think the success of the operation will depend on the support it gets, but the effort is fine”. Filix Thirripus: “I have not heard of the concerts, but I think it is a very good idea. Doing something against poverty is always a good idea”. Moses Massumo: “No, but it is a very good thing. It will benefit the people it is supposed to”. Christian Luthje: “I have heard about some concerts being held in Africa; they are collecting money for AIDS I think. U2 is doing a lot of work for the third world, for people who are in need, but you cannot look away from the self-promoting thing too. But I think it is OK.” Shavaughn Wilken: “I haven’t heard about it.”Yvonne Steenkamp: “I might have heard about it; yes, I saw the ad on TV. It would be brilliant if it works. Maybe people want to promote themselves, but it is not so horrible if they can help people.” Anton de Klerk: “I’m not familiar with it, but it sounds like a good idea.” Heinrich Moetley Goinaseb: “I have heard of it but I do not think that it will benefit the people it is supposed to.
