Lazy teachers taken to task

SWAPO’S Chief Whip in the National Assembly, Ben Amadhila, took a swipe at lazy teachers as the first round of budget debate concluded in the House last week.

Recalling his school days in the 1940s, Amadhila said school inspectors kept teachers and principals “on their toes”. Nowadays, he maintained, the input of teachers was “deplorable” and many did not even pitch at school during working hours.Questioning whether the education system was yielding the desired returns, Amadhila said teachers lacked the necessary commitment to produce quality education.”Are we getting value for the money we spend on education? I don’t think so.”He said it was not very encouraging to note the large number of young Namibians seeking employment opportunities abroad, especially in the United Kingdom.Amadhila said while they were abroad he hoped that they were being “torchbearers of Namibian culture” and promoting the country as one of economic opportunities.Nowadays, he maintained, the input of teachers was “deplorable” and many did not even pitch at school during working hours.Questioning whether the education system was yielding the desired returns, Amadhila said teachers lacked the necessary commitment to produce quality education.”Are we getting value for the money we spend on education?
