Labour Ministry handled all of 5 657 complaints

THE Labour Ministry received 5 657 complaints about labour issues during the financial year for April 2007 to March 2008.

Of these, 4 724 cases were resolved, according to the Ministry’s latest annual report, tabled in Parliament last Wednesday.Of the unresolved cases, 153 ended in the labour courts, while 798 cases were carried over to the current financial year.The Ministry registered 7 425 jobseekers on its database – 3 832 men and 3 593 women. Of these, 475 were lucky enough to obtain jobs in the retail, agriculture and public sectors.The report listed many constraints such as lack of skills to use statistical software on computers, lack of computers, printers, office furniture and even a shortage of cleaners in some regional offices.’High staff turnover at the Ministry and general delays in project implementation are also challenges,’ the report said.
