Koeberg units both off line

CAPE TOWN – Eskom engineers were hard at work at the end of last week trying to establish the reason why the Koeberg nuclear power station’s unit two had suddenly shut down.

Unit two’s automatic protection mechanism tripped around 14h40 yesterday, shutting the unit down and taking it off line, Eskom spokesperson Fani Zulu said. This means both units at the power station are now off line.Unit one was shut down on January 26 for long-term planned maintenance and was expected to come back on line early in May.Namibia imports about 40 per cent of its electricity from South Africa, which comes mainly from Koeberg. Zulu said Eskom had recently doubled the output of two new gas turbine generators in Atlantis and Mossel Bay, and they are now an important part of managing this period. Zulu appealed to consumers to conserve electricity. – Nampa-Sapa
