Kenyan women’s group tells men: Make war? No love

NAIROBI – A coalition of women’s groups says thousands of women will go on a weeklong sex strike to urge Kenya’s top leaders to stop a feud they say could reprise the bloody chaos that followed the 2007 elections.

Women’s Development Organisation chairwoman Rukia Subow says the group will also pay prostitutes to allow them to strike, and has asked the wives of President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to take part in the strike as well. She says the group believes the boycott will persuade men to pressure the government to make peace.
The disputed election between Kibaki and then-challenger Odinga led to violence that killed more than 1 000 people and left more than 600 000 homeless. The two were installed after a month of mediation but have squabbled ever since.
