THE Keetmanshoop Town Council has honoured two national leaders, President Sam Nujoma and the late Oscar Valentine ‘Hampie’ Plichta, by naming streets after them.
The former Kaiser Street was renamed Sam Nujoma Drive, while Fenchel Street now becomes Hampie Plichta Street. Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, President Sam Nujoma said a street name not only served as a signpost or to give directions, but was a permanent tribute to the endeavours individuals have made for the common good.”For a country like Namibia, this is an indication that we are reshaping our history after the decades of distortion by apartheid colonialism,” the President said.Nujoma praised Plichta, a former Mayor of Keetmanshoop, for his contribution towards positive change in society.”I, therefore, urge the residents of Keetmanshoop to emulate the good example of the late Hampie Plichta by maintaining the ethics of hard work and commitment,” he said.Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, President Sam Nujoma said a street name not only served as a signpost or to give directions, but was a permanent tribute to the endeavours individuals have made for the common good.”For a country like Namibia, this is an indication that we are reshaping our history after the decades of distortion by apartheid colonialism,” the President said.Nujoma praised Plichta, a former Mayor of Keetmanshoop, for his contribution towards positive change in society.”I, therefore, urge the residents of Keetmanshoop to emulate the good example of the late Hampie Plichta by maintaining the ethics of hard work and commitment,” he said.
