THE mayor of Keetmanshoop, Moses Titus, has called for an end to ‘a culture of begging’ at the town.
‘Schools, institutions and persons write letters to [the town] council begging for assistance or money. Let us stop this culture, come up with business proposals that will lead us to a permanent, sustainable solution for the good of our schools, communities and institutions,’ Titus said at a community meeting on Monday.Titus said it has become commonplace to see children begging in front of local shops. ‘This is an everyday occurrence. By giving this child N$1, we are not helping the nation. We are indeed creating a culture of beggars,’ said Titus, adding that collective efforts are needed to fight the begging culture. Furthermore, Titus called on residents to support Karas governor Bernardus Swartbooi in his endeavours to stimulate economic growth in the region.’Let us support the ideals and programmes of one another in this region. Let us unite as one team, interlink and make the great Karas Region the number one region,’ said Titus.
