Junior Nujoma’s drunken driving case postponed

THE grandson and namesake of Founding President Sam Nujoma made a brief appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Samiki Nujoma was arrested in the capital on Saturday after he allegedly crashed into a railing next to the road on Hosea Kutako Avenue with his German luxury vehicle.According to the Crime Investigation Coordinator in the Khomas Region, Deputy Commissioner Silvanus Nghishidimbwa, Nujoma claimed that he was bumped by from behind by a vehicle operated by Simon Andjamba, who allegedly followed him from a bar in Katutura.As a result of the alleged collision into his vehicle, Nujoma claimed to have lost control over his car and crashed into the rails, Nghishidimbwa said.After the alleged accident, Nujoma claimed he heard gunshots fired.However, by the time the Police arrived at the scene, only Samiki Nujoma and his car were found on the scene, Nghishidimbwa said yesterday.The Police officer further said that Nujoma alleged that he was followed by Andjamba’s vehicle after an altercation at Andjamba’s hangout spot in Katutura ‘where they were enjoying themselves’.According to Nghishidimbwa, Nujoma claimed that he wanted to stop the confrontation from escalating into a fight so he left the venue.Nujoma was released on bail of N$4 000 on Sunday. He made his first court appearance before Magistrate Helvi Shilemba yesterday.She postponed the case until September 14 for further Police investigation.Although Nujoma initially laid a charge of assault against Andjamba, he withdrew this charge yesterday, Nghishidimbwa said.
