Jumbos back behind Etosha fence

THIRTEEN elephants that escaped from the Etosha National Park on Sunday evening have been driven back into the park, a senior conservation official said yesterday.

Chrispin Nkonkwena, the Chief Control Warden for the north-central regions, said the elephants got out after flattening the park fence. ‘The park fence is not electrified at some parts,’ he said.He said nine of the elephants were found at Onyaanya village, two at Oshivelo, one at Omuthiya and one at Omuntele settlement in the Oshikoto Region. The Ministry drove them back into the park with the help of a helicopter belonging to the Namibian Defence Force on Sunday afternoon, he said.People living near parks are advised not to try and chase away elephants on their own, as this could be dangerous.
