It’s lights OUT tomorrow!

NAMIBIANS, and especially Windhoek residents, have been asked to join big cities around the globe by switching off the lights in their homes and offices for one hour tomorrow night to link up with an international effort to highlight the perils of global warming.

The big blackout in Windhoek – from 19h30 to 20h30 tomorrow night – has been organised by FuturEnergy, a South African organisation that will hold an international energy conference in Windhoek during October this year. This hour of darkness is called “Earth hour” and was originally conceived in Sydney, Australia.Towns on the islands of Hawaii will follow suit at their local time of 19h30.”Many companies and 29 000 people have already committed themselves to switching off,” FuturEnergy said in a statement.”If other businesses and individuals support this action it will send a big message to the world that at least these two great cities and their citizens care about the effects of climate change on the planet.”The FuturEnergy conference will address the single most important issue facing all countries in the foreseeable future – how to generate and save energy without damaging the planet.
