ROAD RAGE allegedly got the better of a Policeman in Windhoek yesterday morning when he shot a taxi driver in the head with his service pistol.
The incident occurred at around seven o’clock in front of the main gate of the Ramatex Textile Factory in Otjomuise, where taxis were dropping people off for work. The Police Public Relations Department confirmed the incident and reported that the victim, Elifas Nankudi, was in a critical condition at the Windhoek Central Hospital.According to the Police, Nankudi had allegedly blocked the path of the suspect who was parked in a white Mazda pick-up with a female passenger in front of the factory’s entrance.More taxis arrived and allegedly appeared to gang up with Nankudi against the Policeman, making it difficult for him to leave.A verbal spat broke out between the taxi drivers before they eventually drove off. However Nankudi allegedly still refused to leave. He is alleged to have continued to taunt the Police officer by refusing to allow him to pass. The Police officer reportedly removed the key from the ignition of Nankudi’s car and pulled him out of the vehicle. He then allegedly drew his service weapon and shot Nankudi at close range. He returned to his vehicle and was closely guarded by Police officers who arrived at the scene while emergency workers attended to Nankudi. The accused, who cannot be named until he appears in court on attempted murder charges, is an officer in the motor vehicle theft department.
