TEHRAN – Iran said yesterday it has resumed negotiations with Russia on a compromise proposal aimed at ending a standoff with the international community over its nuclear programme.
“The Iranian delegation headed by Ali Hosseini-Tash held a first round of negotiations with the Russians yesterday (Monday),” Supreme National Security Council spokesman Hossein Entezami told AFP. “The negotiations are going on.”The talks in Moscow cover a proposal by Russia to enrich uranium on behalf of Iran on Russian territory to ensure Iran’s nuclear programme is not diverted towards weapons production as alleged by the United States.Enriched uranium is used in the nuclear fuel cycle but it can also make the core of an atomic bomb.”Iran believes negotiation based on international agreements is the solution to get out of the present situation and accepts all constructive proposals in this respect,” Entezami said.Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, he added: “We have said several times the IAEA is the competent authority to resolve the nuclear issue”.”Within the framework of the IAEA and the NPT, we will pursue our consultations and talks with different countries.”The talks started ahead of a key meeting at the Security Council on how to address Iran’s refusal to halt sensitive uranium enrichment as demanded by the IAEA.The Iranian official also hit out at the United States, saying it “seeks to use the Security Council as an instrument to pressure Iran”.- Nampa-AFP”The negotiations are going on.”The talks in Moscow cover a proposal by Russia to enrich uranium on behalf of Iran on Russian territory to ensure Iran’s nuclear programme is not diverted towards weapons production as alleged by the United States.Enriched uranium is used in the nuclear fuel cycle but it can also make the core of an atomic bomb.”Iran believes negotiation based on international agreements is the solution to get out of the present situation and accepts all constructive proposals in this respect,” Entezami said.Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, he added: “We have said several times the IAEA is the competent authority to resolve the nuclear issue”.”Within the framework of the IAEA and the NPT, we will pursue our consultations and talks with different countries.”The talks started ahead of a key meeting at the Security Council on how to address Iran’s refusal to halt sensitive uranium enrichment as demanded by the IAEA.The Iranian official also hit out at the United States, saying it “seeks to use the Security Council as an instrument to pressure Iran”.- Nampa-AFP
