Inline hockey tourney takes centre stage

THE annual Pick ‘n Pay Windhoek Schlachterei Kamikaze Inline Hockey tournament on Monday received a combined cash sponsorship of N$15 000.

The Kamikaze Inline Hockey Club, who are the organizers of the upcoming tournament, received N$7 500 from Pick ‘n Pay and another N$7 500 from Windhoek Schlachterei, which are both subsidiaries of the Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies.Windhoek Schlachterei’s managing director Anton Westraadt said the cash sponsorship is part of the company’s social responsibilities towards communities the businesses operate from, and where they generate their income.Asked if a similar sponsorship will continue in 2010, Westraadt said time will tell, adding that there is no reason why the company cannot continue next year.Pick n Pay’s managing director Henry Ferris said sport and education are at the core of the company’s social responsibility, and they would like to assist and create opportunities in the sport arena.Meanwhile, Kamikaze Inline Hockey Club chairperson Barbara Thiem said the tournament will start today until Sunday at the Deutscher Turn Und Sportverein (DTS) sport ground.She added that five clubs will compete in the tournament, with 85 players set to showcase their talent.The tournament caters for the Under-8, 12, 14, 16, 18, open ladies, masters and ladies’ masters categories.Clubs competing are Badgers, Cazadores and Kamikaze, all from Windhoek, while Swakopmund will be represented by Coastal Pirates, and Otjiwarongo by Scorpion Hockey Club. According to her, the three winners in each category will only receive medals instead of prize monies. – Nampa
