JAKARTA – Indonesia was yesterday due to pull out 2 600 soldiers out of Aceh province as it steps up the withdrawal of troops under a peace agreement that ended decades of conflict with rebels, an army spokesman said.
On Sunday, 800 troops were shipped out after the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) fulfilled its part of the first phase of the landmark Helsinki pact by surrendering more than a quarter of its arsenal. “Four battalions, each consisting of 650 troops, will leave Aceh on September 20.Other departures of troops are scheduled for September 21, 23 and 25,” army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Erie Soetiko said yesterday.- Nampa-Reuters”Four battalions, each consisting of 650 troops, will leave Aceh on September 20.Other departures of troops are scheduled for September 21, 23 and 25,” army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Erie Soetiko said yesterday.- Nampa-Reuters
