THE overtime bill at the Karas Regional Council shot up to N$80 000 this month because of preparations for the Independence Day celebrations held at Keetmanshoop.
Acting Chief Regional Officer Saul Kahuika on Friday told a council meeting that a directive from the Secretary to Cabinet compelled the council to make the payments out of its own coffers. According to Kahuika, some council’s staffers will earn up to N$5 000 extra because of the Independence Day preparations. He said the council had no choice but to pay the overtime.’The directive is crystal clear,’ he said. The Councillor for the Karasburg Constituency, Paulus Efraim, had suggested that the overtime payments be shared between the Regional Council and the Office of the Secretary to Cabinet. The council decided to foot the bill on condition that all overtime claims be verified by department heads. luqman@namibian.com.na
