I’m not great says Messi

MADRID – Despite hitting eight goals in a week, and earning comparisons with former players like his compatriot Diego Maradona and Brazil’s Pele, the magical Lionel Messi of Barcelona refuses to admit he maybe the best player that ever graced a football pitch.

The little Argentine has now scored 11 of Barcelona’s last 14 goals, virtually single-handedly keeping the champions neck-and-neck with Real Madrid at the top of the LA Liga table. Messi followed up his triple in the 3-0 win over Valencia last weekend and double strike in the 4-0 midweek win over Stuttgart, which ensured a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals, with another hat-trick in Barcelona 4-2 La Liga win over Zaragoza on Sunday.Soccer players must win the World Cup before they can be considered one of the sport’s greats, in-form Barcelona forward Messi was quoted as saying yesterday.’To become a legend, to be great, you also have to win a World Cup,’ Messi said in an interview with Spanish daily El Mundo.’I have only just turned 22. It’s all happening very quickly and you have to stay calm,’ he added.- Nampa-Reuters
