ID suicide: Officials dismissed

JOHANNESBURG – Two Pinetown home affairs officials have been dismissed following the suicide of a man whose identity document application was allegedly torn up, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced yesterday.

‘A disciplinary hearing was held for the two officials and a verdict of dismissal reached,’ she said in a surprise visit to the department’s offices in Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg.The two officials have been served with letters of dismissal. They may however still appeal,’ she said.Skhumbuzo Nhlongo, 22, committed suicide after the incident in August.Dlamini-Zuma said people had a constitutional right to quality service delivery from home affairs officials.She urged people not to resort to drastic actions such as suicide.During her visit, she spoke to the public about the quality of service delivery at the officeToday, Dlamini-Zuma will visit the Sisonke municipal district where a pilot stakeholder forum has been established to allow interaction between the public and officials as well as efficient service delivery.- Nampa-Sapa
