TODAY is World Environment Day and the theme in Namibia is renewable energy to combat climate change.
The main event will be at the Habitat Research Centre in Katutura this morning. Namiban environmentalist Shirley Bethune says there are many things Namibians can do to protect the environment and reduce the impact of climate change. These include using renewable energy in homes, avoiding water and air pollution, turning off nonessential lights at night and using indigenous plants in gardens.Bethune says protecting endemic and indigenous plants and animals, not wasting water, stopping the felling of trees for ?rewood and taking the environment into account in development planning would also help.Environmentalists say rural people will be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and it is essential that they be adequately informed of climate change, what problems it will bring and how such problems can be reduced.Namiban environmentalist Shirley Bethune says there are many things Namibians can do to protect the environment and reduce the impact of climate change. These include using renewable energy in homes, avoiding water and air pollution, turning off nonessential lights at night and using indigenous plants in gardens.Bethune says protecting endemic and indigenous plants and animals, not wasting water, stopping the felling of trees for ?rewood and taking the environment into account in development planning would also help.Environmentalists say rural people will be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and it is essential that they be adequately informed of climate change, what problems it will bring and how such problems can be reduced.
