A DOUBLE-story house in Swakopmund’s Vineta-suburb was on fire on Saturday-night, but thanks to the swift response of the local fire-brigade, limited destruction was caused.
According to the deputy fire chief of Swakopmund, Gerhard Kotze, the fire brigade was notified of the incident just after 18h00. They were at the scene within minutes, and also managed to extinguish the flames within minutes.’It was a big fire, but we managed to contain it. It seems to have been caused by an electrical short circuit on the upper story. A plug seemed to have caught fire, and being close to an open window, the flame was fuelled by more oxygen, which caused the flames to move to the ceiling,’ Kotze told The Namibian. The home belongs to a family with three children. No one was injured, but the destruction in the upper story is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.’Nearly everything was destroyed there,’ said Kotze. The newspaper understands that the electricity allegedly tripped several times before one of the children were allegedly sent to see what was going on. When the boy came to the room, he saw smoke and called the parents. The family fled from the house and the fire brigade was notified.
