A TOTAL of 1 642 summonses, worth N$860 000, were issued for traffic offences in the Erongo Region in December.
Statistics issued by the Erongo Police reveal that the most common offence during the period was speeding, for which 573 fines were issued.Unlicensed drivers (265 fines) and worn tyres (112 fines) took second and third place. For unlicensed vehicles, 102 fines were issued. For drunken driving, 59 people were arrested, mainly in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.A total of 156 accidents in towns and on main roads, and five fatalities, were reported in this time.In the meantime, another accident was reported on Tuesday on the road between Swakopmund and the Langer Heinrich Uranium mine.Two people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Swakopmund State Hospital.The latest statistics from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund show that the total road deaths so far this month remain at 10.
