Hangana’s Avro Warrior docks at Walvis Bay

HANGANA Seafood recently bought the Avro Warrior, a wet-fish trawler, for N$38 million.

The Avro Warrior arrived from Ireland in January and completed her first Namibian voyage on February 13.
According to a press statement from the company, this addition to Hangana Seafood’s fleet is in line with a vessel replacement strategy that the Board of Directors of the group initiated several years ago in order to update its ageing fleet. This strategy ensures high levels of efficiency and performance when it comes to the harvesting of hake for Hangana Seafood. The acquisition also personifies the company’s intent of becoming a world-class value-adding hake company by 2011.
Technically the Avro Warrior is equipped to be superior to any other vessel in the Hangana fleet and the company is expecting very high levels of performance from this investment.
The areas of improvement expected include improved fuel consumption and increased fishing time. This trawler is also tailor made for operating in adverse weather conditions, the statement read.
‘The Avro Warrior is equipped with a bow thruster ensuring exceptional manoeuvrability. Only four wet-fish bottom trawlers in Namibia have this, of which Hangana owns two,’ said Hannes Uys, Operations Director of Hangana Seafood.
Said Managing Director of Hangana Seafood, Hendrik van der Westhuizen: ‘Considering all the technical advantages of Avro Warrior, we are confident that this large investment is justified – even when taking the current economic climate into consideration. The strategic investment in this critical component of our business will reap exceptional rewards in the future.’
