Golden handshake for SAA boss

JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance will submit parliamentary questions to the minister of public enterprises this week asking for the amounts of the retrenchment packages of all SAA’s and Transnet’s outgoing board members.

The party’s public enterprises spokesman, Ian Davidson, said that despite the fact that the airline reported an R8,73 billion loss last year, SAA chief executive Andre Viljoen was receiving a golden handshake of R3,6 million. “On top of this he was paid a salary of R2,2 million and given a performance bonus of almost a R1 million rand.”During Viljoen’s last two years at the helm of SAA, the company made losses amounting to R15 billion, Davidson said. There was no doubt that SAA could be privatised with no negative impact on the provision of air travel service in South Africa.”This means that the true cost of state-ownership of SAA is not only the R15 billion rand spent by taxpayers on bailing the airline out of its management failures, but now also an additional R7,55 million for the manager who presided over the failures,” said Davidson.”Why should South Africans stand for this gross looting of our hard-earned tax payments? The answer is: they shouldn’t.”The DA wants Minister Alec Erwin to justify why our government needs to own SAA and bail out its losses with our money.”-Nampa-Sapa”On top of this he was paid a salary of R2,2 million and given a performance bonus of almost a R1 million rand.”During Viljoen’s last two years at the helm of SAA, the company made losses amounting to R15 billion, Davidson said.
