The queen of rap, Lioness, is bringing Hoevember back, only this time around it will be much more glamorous with performances under the theme cotton candy.
Hoevember is Lionesss brainchild and aims to celebrate and uplift women, and to create a safe space for women and their allies who have been victims of abuse, sexual and gender-based violence or any form of harassment.
The idea is to share stories, comfort and have fun.
“All my girls are coming up pretty and colourful and we hope to just have some really meaningful speeches and meaningful connections with all the girls and everybody who forms part of the community. I really hope more numbers will come out and that more people will be willing to share their experiences about how they have felt unsafe,” she says.
While the word hoe has been regarded as a derogatory term for years, feminists and sexual rights activist are increasingly using the term as a bold statement in reclaiming the words patriarchal society uses to label women such as hoe, slut and b*tch.
Highlighting that things change continuously and times are shifting, Lioness personal outlook has always been that the people invited to these events have been ostracised and are crying out for freedom.
“The thing is those are not just things, but basic human rights so I just hope that we can continue to have this annually to raise awareness about the issues we face and to educate those who find themselves on the wrong side of the conversation,” she says.
Hoevember takes place on Friday, 26 November 2021, at the Brewers Market Rooftop.
Lioness says the event makes a political statement and celebrates the freedom of women and the LGBTQI+ community, and is dedicated to all those who have suffered an injustice by the system.
