ALMAZE Beukes (13), a little girl who was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right knee last year, is back from Cape Town and still has both her legs.
This was made possible by the generous donations her trust received after an appeal was made in The Namibian.
After receiving chemotherapy Almaze needed to go to South Africa for a complete knee reconstruction, which can only be done in Cape Town. Alternatively, her leg would have had to be amputated.
Dr Keith Hosking, who performed the operation, cut out all the cancer but Almaze still has to undergo three further sessions of chemotherapy to make sure that all the cancer cells are destroyed.
The operation cost N$200 000 and the family raised N$150 000. ‘People paid anything from N$20 to N$20 000 into the trust’s account and through this generosity it was possible for our baby to keep her leg,’ said Gertruida Beukes, her mother.
The operation was done on December 12 and although Almaze still has pain and needs physiotherapy and some more chemotherapy, she is looking forward to going back to school and a normal life.
‘I miss my friends and school and cannot wait to go back,’ she told The Namibian with a huge smile.
