CRICKET Namibia (CN) on Wednesday appointed Jan Frylinck as the new captain of the senior men’s national team with immediate effect after the previous captain, Stephen Baard, accepted a playing contract in New Zealand.
Baard took over the captaincy from Sarel Burger earlier this year after the retirement of the latter, and will be away from October this year until the end of March 2019. He will return for the International Cricket Council 2020 World Cup T20.
In a media release issued on Wednesday, Cricket Namibia said the all-rounder Frylinck has made many telling contributions, including his first first class century against Scotland in June 2017, centuries in successive innings against Eastern Province and Border in January 2018, and taking 5 wickets for 38 off 38 overs bowling against Easterns in 2017.
Frylinck was born in the Cape Province in South Africa, but is now a Namibian citizen, and has represented Namibia since 2016.
“During his time as a Namibian player, he was under the captaincy of Burger, and has therefore had the perfect opportunity to learn from an outstanding captain,” the statement said.
As a left-handed batter and bowler, he also brings balance to both batting and bowling attacks, and his fielding in the slips has been a consistent feature.
“CN has every confidence in Frylinck, and wishes him the best with this important milestone in his career,” it said. – Nampa
