A FREE ambulance service was launched at Swakopmund yesterday to complement emergency services at the coast during the holiday season.
The Eagles Christian Centre Ambulance was designated solely for responding to road accidents.
The ambulance was provided by the Christian centre, while ambulance equipment and fuel were donated by the business community. The crew consists of experienced volunteer paramedics.
The president of the Eagles Christian Centre, Ruben Petrus, said the services would be rendered free of charge during the holiday season, as part of the MVA Fund’s Xupifa Eemwenyo road-safety project.
The ambulance will be in service at the coast throughout the year.
Petrus said it was encouraging to see the business community’s willingness to support the initiative.
Swakopmund Major Germina Shitaleni called on emergency services that request medical aid membership cards before assisting accident victims to revisit their rules and regulations.
‘I strongly believe that life is precious and accounts can be sorted out later after lives have been saved,’ she said.
