NAMIBIA has been identified as one of the countries to benefit from Fifa’s 20 community football centres which will be in operation by 2010.

This came after Fifa launched its first 20 centres last week which are mainly aimed at using the legacy of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa to address social challenges across the impoverished continent.
The facilities, which will be known as the Football For Hope Centres, were revealed at a groundbreaking ceremony in South Africa late last week.
The facility will include office space and an Astroturf pitch and it is not yet known when construction will start in Namibia.
Yesterday, The Namibian Sport could not obtain comment from Namibia Football Association (NFA) chief executive officer Barry Rukoro, as he is attending a Fifa meeting in Switzerland.
The president of the association, John Muinjo, is also attending the same meeting in Zurich.
But South Africa’s 2010 World Cup Organising committee chief Danny Jordaan said at the event that the World Cup is more than football.
‘It is more than 90 minutes and it is how we create a lasting legacy, not only in South Africa, but throughout the continent,’ he said.
The centres will not only be places of football development, but community centres used for HIV-AIDS awareness, public education and public health services.
Other countries that stand to benefit from these centres include Mali, Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda. Other countries on the continent will be identified in future.
