Five arrested for Karibib farm attack

THE Police in Erongo on Saturday arrested five men suspected of being involved in an attack on the farm Riksburg near Karibib two weeks ago in which Dottie Jooste (89) was fatally injured and her helper, Selma Kavari, sustained serious injuries.

Jooste, who had to undergo surgery in Windhoek for a broken thighbone, died in hospital three days later.According to the Chief Crime Investigation Co-ordinator for Erongo, Chief Inspector Charles Sibolile, the Police responded to tip-offs that led to the arrests. He said although three men were directly involved in the attack, two more were arrested as accomplices. All the suspects were arrested at Karibib and Otjimbingwe.According to Sibolile, the suspect arrested for allegedly firing at farmworkers during the attack gave the pistol – suspected to be stolen – to another person to hide. When the Police went to this person, they learned that he had given the pistol to a third person.’When we got to last person, we confiscated the pistol and arrested him and the previous accomplice who gave him the pistol. They are facing charges of being in possession of a firearm without a licence and defeating the course of justice,’ said Sibolile. All the suspects will appear in the Karibib Magistrate’s Court today. They face several charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm without a licence;and defeating the course of justice.’Jooste was seriously injured during the attack. Complications … led to her death. This is why we are charging with murder,’ he explained.
