MUTUAL and Federal, Nedbank and Old Mutual made a donation of N$80 000 to their Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) partner – Women’s Action for Development (WAD) – in support of the non-profit organisation’s efforts to uplift people in rural areas.
The sponsorship will enable WAD to hold four Field Days in 2009 for people living in rural areas, hosting workshops on the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills to generate their own income and become more self-reliant.WAD Executive Director, Veronica de Klerk, accepted the donation and thanked the companies for being reliable partners, adding that other companies should follow their example.’Namibian enterprises should realise that poverty in the country exercises a tremendous drag effect on the Namibian economy,’ she said, adding that contributing to the fight against poverty was the way to level the economic playing field in the country. She called upon Government to play their part and help alleviate poverty by offering special tax concessions to companies that make donations, and by increasing import tariffs in order to stimulate local production and entrepreneurship.ndapwa@namibian.com.na
