THE Potters’Association of Namibia (PAN) held its second ‘Fill a Bowl’ fundraising evening last Friday in Swakopmund, and according to PAN Swakopmund’s Carola Lorck, it was a ‘resounding success’.
Of the 365 colourful ceramic bowls, in various shapes and sizes and beautifully decorated, 260 bowls were sold, raking in a total of N$20 000. A silent auction, displaying a six-piece set of ‘recipe bowls’ also brought in N$790 – the highest bid for a bowl was N$160.A silent auction is where the items are on display, and under each item a list on which the bidder writes his or her name and contact details, as well as his bid. The person who entered the highest bid (usually the last entry on the list), is the winner.Scores of locals attended the evening, buying one or more bowls, and filling them with a choice of soups that ranged from potato, pea, butternut and bean soup to Moroccan lentil soup, which were then enjoyed in the company of friends and family. The bowls, made by PAN members, are for keepsakes.Ten per cent of the profit raised from the event will go to a soup kitchen in Mondesa that provides meals for the elderly, and another soup kitchen in the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC), which provides meals for children living there. The remaining funds will be used mainly for the organisation of the 6th National Ceramics Biennale in 2013 and other exhibitions and workshops offered to PAN members and any other Namibian potters.
