ONE-YEAR-OLD Wilku van Staden, the grandson of former Cancer Association director Kurt Johannesson, was born without eyes. This is a rare condition where the eyes do not develop in the embryonic stage.
Several visits to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town and other specialists confirmed that there is nothing that can be done for Wilku. In his short life Wilku has already had several operations and he only weighs 11 kilograms. The financial implications weigh heavily on the family. The Wilku van Staden Trust was started to help with the medical costs as well as further operations needed, which the family’s medical aid fund does not sufficiently cover. When he is a little older, Wilku will receive eye prostheses which will have to be replaced regularly as his skull grows. Mostert Landgrebe are the auditors of the trust and people wanting to help can make deposits into the Wilku van Staden Trust, Bank Windhoek at Maerua Mall, branch number 48 38 72, account number 800 236 1891.
