Falcon Response ‘Over The Top’

Falcon Response ‘Over The Top’

IN The Namibian of February 12 a rather overburdened reaction to Liz Komen’s ‘City Kestrel’ article of January 30 was published under the title ‘Falconers not the problem’. It is not quite clear who the author of the response is, either Tom Newton or Dr Adrian Lombard (SAFA).

Whichever, or maybe both of them certainly read into Ms Komen’s article something which I fail to find, even on the third reading. Ms Komen makes a factual statement apropos the keeping of wildlife in captivity that ‘falconry is illegal’ in Namibia. She makes no further mention of, and does not express an opinion about falconry. The author of the letter feels threatened as a falconer to the point where he makes a derogatory statement regarding Ms Komen’s ‘display of a measure of ignorance which, in itself contributes to this sort of incident’.
Gentlemen, you have totally missed the point of a lovely article focusing attention on the occurrence of, and potential danger to, urbanised raptors in Windhoek and surrounds. Instead you found in your own minds a perceived threat to your own interest. This poses the question: Why on earth would that be?
