EU trade chief seeks backing

LUXEMBOURG – EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said yesterday that he hoped EU foreign ministers meeting here would give their backing for his mandate to negotiate in world trade talks in Europe’s name.

“I hope that the outcome of this meeting today will enable me to move forward, not restrict my mandate and help me negotiate on Europe’s behalf in these very important trade talks,” Mandelson said as he arrived for an emergency gathering of EU foreign ministers.
