AFTER seeing production lines at Namibian fish factories dedicated to sorting by-catch, especially kingklip, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, is considering making this fish another Namibian quota species.
‘There seems to be a major increase in kingklip volumes in Namibian waters, and I think it should be introduced as a quota species,’ he said at the launch of Trachurus Fishing’s new business strategy in Walvis Bay on Friday. The minister said that if production lines at fishing factories are dedicated to a fish that is not a quota species, ‘there must be something’.’We definitely have to look into this. Namibia needs to add more species on its quota list in order to sustainably use its resources to the benefit of the national economy,’ he said. The main quota species are hake, horse mackerel, monkfish, deep-sea crab and rock lobster. Kingklip is currently just a by-catch of the hake industry.
