Ekandjo denies ‘Satan’ statement

LOCAL Government Minister Jerry Ekandjo has denied calling Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) leader Hidipo Hamutenya “a Satan”.

Ekandjo also denied that the Swapo Party co-ordinator for the Oshikoto region, Armas Amukwiyu, had done the same. The Namibian reported yesterday that the two had allegedly called Hamutenya a Satan during the ruling party’s victory celebrations at Omuthiya. On Sunday, the Namibia Press Agency (Nampa) reported that Amukwiyu compared Hamutenya to a devil.”There is no difference between Hidipo and Satan, all of you who are following him should know that,” Nampa quoted Amukwiyu as telling a crowd of Swapo Party members at the Ha-na-He butchery to celebrate their party’s election victory on Saturday.According to Nampa, Amukwiyu also told his audience that it is only the Swapo Party that has genuine pastors and reverends, while describing all the reverends in the RDP camp as “mentally disturbed elements” His utterances followed the closing prayer by the local pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN), Reverend Kaino Kapewangolo, who was also over-excited by the election results and burst into Swapo political slogans.”Viva the Founding President (Dr Sam Nujoma), viva President Hifikepunye Pohamba, viva Swapo viva,” Kapewangolo screamed immediately after saying the closing prayer at the victory celebrations.According to Nampa, Amukwiyu continued by calling Hamutenya, Jesaya Nyamu (RDP interim Secretary General) and Moses Amukoto (elected RDP member of the new Omuthiya Town Council) “shameful elements in the Namibian society”.”Down Cinq-Cinq (Amukoto), down Hidipo, down Nyamu, down Kandy Nehova and all grasshoppers,” Amukwiyu shouted while his audience was cheering and applauding.
