Ear-tagging queried in Parliament

WINDHOEK – One month since the implementation of a livestock identification and traceability system throughout the country, Parliament wants to know how many farmers have complied with the new system.

Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) Member of Parliament McHenry Venaani wants the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, Nickey Iyambo, to update the National Assembly on the implementation of the new system and to confirm how many livestock are estimated to be carrying the new identification tags. “Is it true that companies that are supplying the needed tags have run out of supply, and that this is preventing many farmers from auctioning their animals?” he asked last week.Venaani also asked if the Ministry couldn’t consider extending the deadline to allow more farmers to comply. The identification system, which requires farmers to use ear tags or tattoos instead of branding livestock, was introduced in the Khomas Region last October and implemented countrywide on February 1 this year. The system, which is one component of the Farm Assured Namibia Meat (FanMeat) scheme, was approved by Cabinet in 1999 and has been phased in since then.- Nampa”Is it true that companies that are supplying the needed tags have run out of supply, and that this is preventing many farmers from auctioning their animals?” he asked last week.Venaani also asked if the Ministry couldn’t consider extending the deadline to allow more farmers to comply. The identification system, which requires farmers to use ear tags or tattoos instead of branding livestock, was introduced in the Khomas Region last October and implemented countrywide on February 1 this year. The system, which is one component of the Farm Assured Namibia Meat (FanMeat) scheme, was approved by Cabinet in 1999 and has been phased in since then.- Nampa
