DTS volleyball Series thrills

THE third of seven 2011 DTS Maerua SuperSpar Volleyball Series tournaments this year took place on Saturday with 33 teams participating.

Seven ladies two-a-side teams took part and they played in a double elimination format to determine the best team. No. 1 seed Julia Laggner and Lizette Roettcher easily moved to the semi finals where they faced last tournament’s winners Brigitte Looser and Karin Curschmann. This time Laggner and Roettcher made sure they did not lose, instead winning 2-0 to advance to the finals where they faced third seeded team Anita Kinder and Simone von Wietersheim who beatKatja Biesemann and Wiebke Hoeritzauer in the second semi final. Laggner and Roettcher won the finals in an exiting match 2-0 with third place going to Looser and Curschmann.The men’s competition saw the top ranked team Mwita Sikopo and Rector Mbeha in brilliant form as they marched through to the final without loosing a single set. They proved to be the team to beat and had no problems reaching the finals where they met no. 2 seeded team Heiko Diehl and Peter Brinkmann who beat Deon Cloete and Michael de Koe in the semi final. Sikopo and Mbeha comfortably clinched their first title as a team this year with a 2-0 win. Third place went to Cloete and de Koe.The youth competition attracted five teams and they played round robin format, 10 games in total which kept them busy until late afternoon. Many games had to be decided in three set tiebreak matches. Erik Fischer/Bernard Schurz won all their 4 matches without loosing one set clinching theit first victory this year.Tin Hlupic and Brendon de Jager came second while Rico Behrens and Wilko Stieler took 3rd place.The 4-a-side social category had 14 teams battling it out for the tournament title. The top eight teams that qualified for the 1/4 finals were Cats & Dogs, Farmers Attack, Ladies Paradise, Namibia Airports Company A & B (NAC), Trustco Legal Shield, 4zafunofit and Intouch 4. Defending champions Cats and Dogs played against Ladies Paradise in the semi final winning narrowly with 2-1 sets, qualifying once again for the final. The other semi final was a thriller between NAC A and Intouch 4.Intouch 4 winning the first set, NAC A coming back to equalize and then also winning the decisive third set to qualify for the final. The final was once again a very close three set match, with Cats & Dogs winning 2-1 sets winning their second title of the year. Third place went to Ladies Paradise.In the 2-a-side player Rector Mbeha and Martha Henghono from NAC A were voted FX FITNESS Most Athletic Players of the tournament.
