Disease kills cattle on NDC farms

VETERINARY officials are investigating a disease that has killed about 30 cattle on Namibia Development Corporation (NDC) farms in the Mangetti area in the North.

The cattle belong to farmers who were evicted from western Kavango in June last year for grazing their cattle illegally there. The farmers’ spokesman, Vilho ‘Kabila’ Hamunyela, told The Namibian that the cattle started dying in October last year, but the farmers didn’t take much notice of the deaths at first. Some of the herders even ate the meat of animals that had died of the disease, he said.State Veterinarian Dr Richard Gavhamende said he had sent a team to the farms to investigate and expected a report from them by tomorrow.’I cannot comment on this now, since we have to determine which disease it is before I can give you more details on this,’ he said.
