Diergaardt elected to global body

MEMBER of Parliament Theo Diergaardt has been elected as Vice President of Global Parliamentarians on Habitat for the next two years.

Diergaardt, the Regional Councilor for the Rehoboth Urban West constituency, was elected during the 22nd session of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya, last week.In an interview with The Namibian Diergaardt said discussions focused on financing affordable housing.He said the group’s main objective is to upgrade slums and informal settlements by providing housing and improving sanitation.Diergaardt said there is need for governments to formulate national policies designed to address the problem of migration from rural to urban areas. That is the main cause of the growing slums in developing countries, he said.luqman@namibian.com.na
