Development Is Misunderstood

SOME people say that the country can only develop by sharpening the educational area; I oppose this notion.

If we are all formally educated, for example to the level of doctorate degrees, who will be our babysitters? Who will be our cleaners? Who will be our cattle herders? Only a few who are educated can physically drive development of the country. I believe that not all Namibian citizens can succeed in academics. Therefore there are those who are capable in craft work and who are business-minded but are uneducated. There are some with innate vocational skills are unable to make it in formal education to reach grade 10 and to be admitted at vocational training centres (VTCs).Some people would say that development is taking place in the country, but it seems the concept of development is misunderstood. Development as a process of change is the process of becoming larger, stronger, or more impressive, successful, or advanced, or of causing somebody or something to change for the better.Some people say that a lot of construction is taking place and so that is development. Is the expansion of infrastructure the only thing we call development while citizens do not even know what the purpose of those buildings and other infrastructure will be?Development should not only be seen physically. To make sure that development is taking place in the country it is not enough to only change the colour of our currency but to make sure that everyone is benefiting and people’s needs are catered for.John LikoroUnam Rundu Campus
