RUNDU – Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku says a lasting solution has to be found by permanently relocating people who have to move to higher ground every summer.
Speaking during a meeting with Kavango regional and local authority councillors at Rundu last week, the Deputy Prime Minister said moving the flood victims every year was proving costly to Government and the victims themselves.Hausiku said some flood relocation camps were not properly managed, as there was poor sanitation which posed serious health risks. The leader of the Mbunza Traditional Authority, Chief Alfons Kaundu, agreed with Hausiku that Government was spending a lot on housing and feeding flood victims every year.Kaundu said there was enough land in his area of jurisdiction where flood victims could be accommodated. According to the Chief, Government only has to erect a water pump station in the area.Hausiku was on a three-day trip to the Kavango Region, during he also visited the San community at Omega, east of Rundu. – Nampa
