Davey van Wyk re-elected as Karibib mayor

Former Karibib mayor Davey van Wyk has been re-elected as the town’s mayor.

Van Wyk, who is on the ticket of the United Democratic Front (UDF), served as mayor in the previous council of 2020 to 2025.

In his acceptance speech, he has pledged to serve Karibib’s diverse community.

“I hereby guarantee you that this council will work together in the best interest of the community,” he says.

He urges his fellow councillors to put politics aside and serve the people.

“When we are coming into this council we are not serving our party members. We took the oath to serve the community collectively,” he says.

Van Wyk also contested the Karibib constituency seat but lost to Swapo’s Lazarus Kanelombo by a margin of 50 votes.

Van Wyk got 2 062 votes and Kanelombe 2 112.

Petrus Ntoni was elected deputy mayor and Tienus Bamm as chairperson of the management committee.

Amanda Du Plessis and Sedney Seibeb form part of the management committee, with Martha Kahumba as an additional member, while Absalom Xoagub remains an ordinary council member.

The council comprises councillors from Swapo (3), UDF (2), Independent Patriots for Change (1) and Landless People’s Movement (1).
